Public Affairs
Many thanks to Jerry Robbins, formerly
Dean of Education at Eastern Michigan University (1991-2004) and
currently (unpaid) Public Affairs Consultant for the Michigan Association
of Colleges for Teacher Education, for following state and national
public affairs and summarizing them for the DARTEP community.

Michigan Non-traditional Route to Teacher Certification Information:
- Summary
document
of
existing non-traditional programs in Michigan; - Senate Bill 0965 introduced last week for an alternative route via legislation;
- The route as proposed by the State Superintendenrt last spring.
Applications are being accepted now
for the MATE student teacher of the year competition. The application
fee and form must be in by March 5, 2010; all materials must be in
by March 18. The winner and finalists are announced on May 14. 
The new elementary
education standards were
approved by the State Board of Education on Jan. 8, 2008. All
information pertaining to the upcoming review may be found on
the MDE web site right
here. Training sessions for reviewers will be held on Sept.
25 at Wayne State, Sept. 28 at Central Michigan, and Oct. 12
at Northern Michigan. The submission deadline for early adopters
is Nov. 1, 2009, and the payment deadline is Dec. 1. The review
session for early adopters is February 12, 2010.
