Welcome to DARTEP!

(Directors and Representatives of Teacher Education Programs in Michigan)

For many years, Deans, Directors of Teacher Education, Directors of Student Teaching, Certification Officers, Michigan Department of Education officials and others who have a keen interest in the preparation of Michigan K-12 teachers have met to discuss the pertinent issues of the day. This organization has been a sounding board as well as a forum for careful analysis of best practice in the preparation of teachers. Although at times there may be disagreement over controversial issues, the tone of debate has always been cordial. As such, this organization serves as a kind of fraternity/sorority of like-minded professionals who value highly their association with one another. With the ever increasing complexity of the certification process, it is reassuring to know that DARTEP continues to serve as a forum where accurate information can be disseminated.

TEAC/NCATE Accreditation Workshop, April 11-12

Hope College is partnering with MDE, TEAC, NCATE, and CAEP to bring an accreditation workshop yo Michigan. The workshop will take place starting Wednesday April 11th and will conclude on April 12th. The next day will be the last DARTEP/MACTE meeting of the year.

A survey has been created to understand institutions' needs and willingness to participate in this workshop. You can take this survey here. For more information, please contact either Madeline Kukla or Thomn Bell.

Next Meeting ... February 3, 2012, Oakland University, Rochester

Meeting information:

Dear DARTEP Members,

New Year Greetings for Health and Sustainability!

We will be meeting on Friday February 3 at Oakland University's Oakland Center in Rochester.

We will have a regular morning meeting and, traditional for the February DARTEP session, we'll have lunch followed by an update from the MDE Office of Professional Preparation. All DARTEP members are encouraged to stay for lunch and the update from MDE, which will be structured as a Q&A on Teacher Certification. Please find the meeting agenda and direction materials attached.

The day begins at 9:00 with registration and a continental breakfast generously provided by the Oakland University School of Education and Human Services. Lunch is being paid for by DARTEP; we ask that you please send your RSVP by January 31 to DARTEP Treasurer Kevin Williams.

Parking at OU
The best place to park is Lot 1. If that is full, the best alternative is in Lots 3 or 5 to the north. All parking on Oakland's campus is free and there are no restricted lots - only a few reserved spaces and they are clearly marked.

Job-Alike Meetings
We will probably only have the one large room at the Oakland Center as there is another large conference taking place that day, though smaller break-out rooms may yet become available. If not, we'll do job-alikes in three corners of the large room.

Looking forward to seeing you there.
Chris

Teleconferencing information:

For those of you who are unable to physically attend the DARTEP meeting this Friday, you can use a web application called WIMBA, use of which is graciously donated by Dave Myton of Lake Superior State University. You should plan to connect at least 15 minutes ahead of schedule, so that a WIMBA software wizard can make sure that your computer has what is needed to make the connection.

During job-alike sessions, the connection will be taken to the Certification Officers meeting. During lunch, WIMBA will be active but not monitored, The connection will be with the Certification Officers' meeting in the afternoon.

To participate, go to http://67.202.210.200, click participant login and enter your name as it will show to the other participants. Run the Wizard if necessary and then you will enter the Lobby. From the list of all sessions select "DARTEP Meeting". A tutorial showing how to use the WIMBA tools is available here: http://www.lssu.edu/podcast/audiofiles/education/chem104/Dartep-participant.mp4.

Dave prepared two .SWF tutorial files one for the presenter controls, and another for the participant. They are both posted to:
http://lssu.edu/podcast/chem104.php - the filenames are self-explanatory, each file is less than 5 minutes (mp4) but about 14MB. It is worth watching and tells you how to "talk" or send a written comment as you participate in the meeting.

Once we activate the presenter login (which we will do at about 9:00 am) you can make a web connection. That will give us time to trouble shoot connections if necessary.

If you need help, email Reuben Rubio on-site for assistance.

Hopefully, these instructions are clear and we look forward to "seeing" and "hearing" from you on Friday.

News:

Meeting dates for 2011-2012 are: October 7, December 2, February 3, and April 13.
