Policy and Legislative Action

At the DARTEP meeting of October 2, 2009, the community voted unanimously to establish a subcommittee of members that would be research issues, changes, and new tidings affecting teacher education programs that come from the State Board of Education, the State Legislature, the Michigan Department of Education, and federal policy and legislation. This subcommittee would then disseminate information to the DARTEP membership, using both the email listserv and this website. The committee is also charged with recommending any action by DARTEP institutions.

Other Committee Activities and Events

Members of the DARTEP community serve on committees and organizations within the State of Michigan that provide a standing report to the membership at each meeting. The following are a list of those groups along with a brief description, and the person responsible for making the report.

Consortium for Outstanding Achievement in Teaching with Technology (COATT) - COATT is a partnership among Michigan universities, colleges, schools, and educational professional organizations aimed at making our state first in the nation when it comes to training preservice and practicing teachers to use technology as an effective teaching tool.

News:

Meeting dates for 2010-2011 are: October 8, December 3, February 4, and April 1.

Michigan Non-traditional Route to Teacher Certification Information:

  • Summary document MS Word doc of existing non-traditional programs in Michigan;
  • Senate Bill 0965 introduced last week for an alternative route via legislation;
  • The route as proposed by the State Superintendenrt last spring.

Applications are being accepted now for the MATE student teacher of the year competition. The application fee and form must be in by March 5, 2010; all materials must be in by March 18. The winner and finalists are announced on May 14. PDF file

The new elementary education standards ms word icon were approved by the State Board of Education on Jan. 8, 2008. All information pertaining to the upcoming review may be found on the MDE web site right here. Training sessions for reviewers will be held on Sept. 25 at Wayne State, Sept. 28 at Central Michigan, and Oct. 12 at Northern Michigan. The submission deadline for early adopters is Nov. 1, 2009, and the payment deadline is Dec. 1. The review session for early adopters is February 12, 2010.
