Welcome to DARTEP!
(Directors and Representatives
of Teacher Education Programs in Michigan)
For many years, Deans, Directors of
Teacher Education, Directors of Student Teaching, Certification
Officers, Michigan Department of Education officials and others
who have a keen interest in the preparation of Michigan K-12 teachers
have met to discuss the pertinent issues of the day. This organization
has been a sounding board as well as a forum for careful analysis
of best practice in the preparation of teachers. Although at times
there may be disagreement over controversial issues, the tone of
debate has always been cordial. As such, this organization serves
as a kind of fraternity/sorority of like-minded professionals who
value highly their association with one another. With the ever
increasing complexity of the certification process, it is reassuring
to know that DARTEP continues to serve as a forum where accurate
information can be disseminated. |

Third Party Comment
The College of Education at Grand
Valley State University is scheduled for an accreditation review by
the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE)
in February of 2012. Federal regulations require that accrediting agencies
allow for public comment on the qualifications of institutions or programs
under consideration for first accreditation or continuing accreditation.
Both
NCATE and GVSU recognize graduates, parents, schools, and community
organizations have valuable perspectives on the quality of the programs
that prepare teachers and other school personnel. We invite interested
parties to submit written comment on the College of Education to:
Board
of Examiners
NCATE
2010 Massachusetts Avenue NW, Suite 500
Washington,
DC 20036-1023
Or e-mail: callforcomments@ncate.org
Comments must address
substantive matters related to the quality of GVSU's professional education
programs, and should specify the party's relationship to the institution
(i.e., graduate, present/ former faculty member, employer of graduates).
Copies of all correspondence received by NCATE no later than November
1st will be submitted to the College of Education prior to the February
2012 review. Anonymous comments will not be accepted.

Next Meeting ...
December 2, 2011, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
Meeting information:
Dear DARTEP Members,
We will be meeting in two weeks on Friday December
2 at the University of Michigan School of Education in Ann Arbor.
The
School of Education building (SEB) is located at 610 East University
Avenue in Ann Arbor (48109). Parking is available in nearby parking
facilities or through metered parking on city streets. Please find
more location information below and in the attachments. We'll be starting
with a 9:00 Registration and 9:30start on the meeting in Whitney Auditorium,
room 1315 (first floor). Special thanks to Beth Grzelak for inviting
us to U of M.
The December DARTEP meeting is traditionally only a morning
session. After this particular meeting, members are invited to have
an eye-opening tour of the School of Education's new Brandon Center
For the Study of Education Practice. This facility is especially exciting
because of the variety of services and resources that support educators'
collaborative work with "records of practice." For Brandon Center staff
to be able to plan for accommodating everyone who would like to stay
for the tour, we are asking that you RSVP by taking the "Doodle
Poll" in Beth Grzelak's message below. Please see the links for
the Doodle Poll and the Brandon Center below.

The School of Education building (SEB) is located
at 610 East University Avenue in Ann Arbor (48109). Parking is
available in nearby parking facilities or through metered parking
on city streets.
We recommend parking in the Republic Parking Garage located at
650 South Forest Avenue, just two short blocks from the SEB. You
will see this structure highlighted on the attached map of the
University of Michigan - Central Campus. Spaces in this parking
structure cost $1.00 per hour Monday through Saturday, and the
structure is open 24 hours per day, seven days a week.
Metered parking is available on most city streets. Gray parking
meters belong to the City of Ann Arbor and are enforced Mondays
through Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., except holidays.
Maize and Blue meters belong to the University of Michigan and
are enforced for the same time periods. The cost for both meters
is $1.00 per hour. Most meters around Central Campus are two hour
meters. An expired city meter parking ticket ranges between $10.00–$25.00.
An expired University meter parking ticket can cost between $6.00–$25.00.
Looking forward to learning more together.
Educationally yours,
Chris

Teleconferencing information:
Teleconferencing participants can use a web application called Blackboard
Collaborate to secure a live audio feed of this meeting and utilize
a chat box to ask questions or make comments. A person planning to
do this should plan to connect at least 30 minutes ahead of schedule
(about 9:00 a.m.), so to secure the connection and adjust his/her audio
feed.
To participate, use this
link.
At that webpage, enter in your first and last name, and then click “Log
In >>”. A box will appear, asking you to open the application
with Java; you should click “OK”. You will need the latest
Java client to use this application. Please be patient as it may take

to load.
Once in the session, you should see your name appear in the top left “Participants” box.
A person teleconferencing in will not be able to participate via their
microphone, only by using the chat box. To ask a question or make a
comment, you will type in the bottom left chat box, which is the thin
horizontal text field. Any text you input will be visible to all teleconferencing
participants and to our moderator.
We encourage you to test out the link to see if you can connect to
this application in advance of Friday morning. It will go live tomorrow,
Thursday, December 1, at 1:00 p.m. for testing. If you experience difficulties
connecting, please contact Ron Miller and
Nick Grundler for assistance.
This Friday’s meeting’s audio will be recorded and archived
for reference after the conference.
Hopefully, these instructions are clear and we look
forward to "seeing" and "hearing" from you on
Friday.
